Taking Courses
on Blackboard®
The Bioethics
Program has chosen to offer its courses through Blackboard,
the world’s most widely used on-line course offering system.
Blackboard was
chosen because of its exceptional reliability and ease of use. A
typical on-line course will consist of lectures, readings, class
discussions - conducted through Blackboard’s “Discussion
Board,” a feature that allows students from different time
zones to engage in a group discussion of selected topics - and
Virtual Classrooms, which replicate the actual classroom. A Blackboard
feature called the “Digital Drop Box” permits students
to drop assignments off at the professor’s office. Blackboard
also offers the ability to present on-line examinations and quizzes,
and to give students instant feedback on their answers. Students
may track their grades through a “grade book” feature.
Anything available on the Web can serve as supplemental reading materials,
and the full range of video media can be delivered through Blackboard.
The Bioethics Program also uses Blackboard to create a “Bioethics
Commons” that alumni and students use to chat with each other
about current events, and to share information and news about everything
from new jobs to family photos.
As one of the oldest on-line graduate
bioethics programs, The Bioethics Program has had a wealth of experience
teaching bioethics to a range of students around the globe. Some
are computer neophytes; others are sophisticates. Our students have
used computer equipment of different vintages, made by an amazing
array of manufacturers, and have taking courses using not only Blackboard
recommended browsers Apple (Safari) and Windows (Internet Explorer)
browsers but a host of others. From the most naïve to the most
sophisticated, we found that we have been able to meet their needs
using Blackboard courseware. |
