Dual Degree Graduate Program in Bioethics and Philosophy
PhD at University of Albany & MS at The Bioethics Program

The dual degree doctorate in philosophy/masters in bioethics program offered by the University at Albany in conjunction with Union Graduate College and the Mount Sinai School of medicine offers students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in philosophy with a specialization in bioethics a unique opportunity to participate in an innovative, personalized, intensive education program in bioethics. Through a combination of online and on-site courses, bioethics students complete a doctorate in philosophy with a nine-course curriculum in bioethics. They have the opportunities to take courses from leading bioethicists and to study clinical ethics and research ethics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, which is located in a world-renowned medical center in New York City. The bioethics section of the program starts with an intensive two-week summer proseminar on
Health and Human Values taught at Union Graduate College which incorporates a clinical visit to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. After completing this seminar, dual-degree students take three core courses online (health policy, bioethics and clinical ethics), a required online practicum, a two-term master's project, a one-week on-site clinical ethics practicum at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and one-week on-site capstone seminar at Union.

The philosophy section of the program is taught at the University at Albany, which from 2004 to 2006 the Philosophical Gourmet ranked as among the top 35 institutions in applied ethics - www.philosophicalgourmet.com-breakdown >. The department's faculty includes Bonnie Steinbock, a world-renowned bioethicist, who specializes in ethical issues in reproduction and genetics. Other members, including Rachel Cohon, Kristen Hessler, and Ron McClamrock, have also published in bioethics; still others (P.D. Magnus, Jon Mandle) have interests that intersect with bioethics. Two additional faculty members specializing in applied ethics will be joining the department in fall 2007.

Admission Requirements: The applicant must be accepted and matriculated in both programs through the admissions process of each program to be enrolled in the dual degree program. Dual Degree components:
In a dual degree program, each school has filed a plan approved by the New York State Department of Education officially recognizing courses taken in another program as counting towards a degree that they offer. In the MS/PhD in Bioethics and Philosophy program, Union-Mount Sinai recognizes three course requirements offered as part of the Philosophy program at the University at Albany as applying towards the MS in Bioethics degree (10 semester credit hours). Both schools recognize the student’s thesis as fulfilling both the two-term master’s project for the MS as the doctoral dissertation for the PhD.

In their coursework at the University at Albany, students in the dual degree program must specialize in the
Values and Society Track and would fulfill all the other requirements of the Philosophy PhD. However, Albany recognizes the 8 credits permitted in a cognate field as being fulfilled in the Union-Mount Sinai Bioethics Program. No special permission from the Albany Philosophy Department's Graduate Studies Committee would be needed for students admitted to the dual degree program. Instead, the following three courses offered by The Bioethics Program will be recognized as credits in an area of specialization outside of Philosophy, and counted as 8 credits towards the philosophy doctorate at the University at Albany: BIE 590: Clinical Ethics (3.33 credits); BIE 620: On-Site Clinical Practicum (3.33 credits); BIE 610: On-Line Clinical Practicum (3.33 credits).

"For the busy professional who works full-time, the on-line bioethics program is a godsend.
Having graduated some 20 years ago, I was apprehensive about going back to school. The courses have exceeded my expectations. My on-line colleagues come from a variety of backgrounds and we all bring something to the table. I feel truly honored to have met such inspiring people, both fellow students and faculty."
