Dual Degree
Master in Social Work from University of Albany (SUNY) MSW & MS at The Bioethics Program
Bioethics is a multi-disciplinary field whose practitioners typically hold multiple degrees and certifications. The 2006 ACES survey of the membership of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH), the national bioethics society, found the MSW degree to rank 12th in the certifications held by practicing bioethicists. Recognizing the significance of social work training for the future of the field of bioethics, The Bioethics Program-an innovative, personalized, intensive education program in bioethics for those who want to put bioethics to work in their own professional careers-has teamed up with the University of Albany's School of Social Welfare (SUNY), to offer a unique dual degree opportunity. Students in the dual degree program take a combination of online and on-site courses in social work and bioethics to complete an eleven-course curriculum in bioethics and a degree in social work.
The Bioethics program starts with an intensive two-week summer proseminar on Health and Human Values taught at Union Graduate College with a clinical visit to Mt Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. After completing this seminar, dual-degree students take five courses online (health policy, biomedical ethics, research ethics, bioethics and the law and clinical ethics), a required online practicum, a two-term master's project, a one-week on-site clinical ethics practicum, and one-week on-site capstone seminar. Social Work and bioethics dual-degree students take four courses that satisfy credits in both programs.
For details about the social work segment of the program visit Masters in Social Work (M.S.W) University at Albany (SUNY). The M.S.W. program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The curriculum is a 60-credit two-year sequence, offering two areas of concentration. After two semesters of generalist preparation, students concentrate in Direct Practice or MACRO concentration. The curriculum is designed for students to gain a broad perspective in assessing social needs and to acquire the knowledge and skills for helping alleviate social problems and the problems of individuals, groups, and communities. Graduate social workers should be able to enhance the social functioning of individuals, groups, families, and communities and promote the development of equitable social policy. Graduates should be committed to excellence, to promotion of social justice, and to service for the vulnerable and oppressed.
The Master of Science in Bioethics and the MSW/MSB Dual Degree programs are registered by the New York State Board of Regents http://www.regents.nysed.gov

"For the busy professional
who works full-time, the on-line bioethics program is a godsend.
Having graduated some 20 years ago, I was apprehensive about
going back to school. The courses have exceeded my expectations.
My on-line colleagues come from a variety of backgrounds and
we all bring something to the table. I feel truly honored to
have met such inspiring people, both fellow students and faculty." |
