On-Site Components
The Bioethics Program requires
three on-site seminars of all masters
degree candidates: the proseminar, an on-site practicum, and capstone.
The Proseminar (Union Campus)
An
80-hour two-week
summer Proseminar in Health & Human Values is designed as an
orientation to bioethics and to “being a student once more.” The
Proseminar is held on the Union College/Union Graduate College campus,
typically in the first two weeks of August. Faculty are from Mount
Sinai and Union and other major medical ethics and bioethics programs.
In addition to lectures, the program involves extensive tours to
clinical and research sites. One of these sites is the Mount Sinai
School of Medicine in New York City (a 3-hour bus ride) where students
spend the day with bioethicists, members of the hospital ethics committee
and the institutional review board.

The On-Site Practicum (Mount
Sinai Campus)
A
40-hour one-week intensive clinical experience held at Mount Sinai
School of Medicine under the direction of Professor Rosamond Rhodes
and clinical faculty at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Students
will be trained in the skills essential to competent clinical ethics
consultation and mediation or for serving on a research ethics committee
(IRB/REC). Students also practice their competencies in clinical
ethics and research ethics through interactions with trained actors
(“standardized
patients”) in standardized research and clinical ethics scenarios
at Mount Sinai’s Morchand Center for Clinical Competence - www.mssm.edu-morchand >
The On-Site Capstone (Union Campus)
a
one-week 40 hour course, typically held in the second week of June on a the
Union Campus with a one-day at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine
and the Morchand Center. Each student is also given a one-on-one “future
plans” session with a faculty member before participating in
graduation exercises in the historic setting of the Union campus - www.union.edu-Webcam >
Transportation and
Lodging: New York City
New
York is a major transportation hub that can be reached by plane,
train, ship, bus or automobile. Students have innumerable choices
in accommodation but a list of residential options will be provided
to assist them in finding lodging.
Transportation and Lodging: Schenectady
A major stop on the New York State Thruway,
Schenectady has an AMTRAK station and is 15 miles from the Albany
International Airport. There are many reasonable motels and accommodations
in the area and college dorm rooms are usually available for a small
fee. New York’s
capital district offers a variety of attractions that students might
find interesting in the evenings or on weekends - Area attractions
