Philpott, PhD, MSBioethics, Science and Ethics Officer Global Campaign for
Microbicides PATH and faculty member of The Bioethics Program was recently
appointed acting chair of The Human Studies Review Board(HSRB). He is an
original member of the board, which was founded in 2006 to advise the US
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the scientific and ethical merits of
research involving intentional exposure of human study participants to
EPA-regulated compounds like pesticides, fungicides and insect repellents.
As a Federal
advisory committee, the HSRB provides advice to the EPA on proposed third-party
research proposals and protocols, as well as completed studies submitted to the
Agency for regulatory decision-making purposes. In addition, it provides
recommendations how to strengthen EPA's programs for protection of human
participants of research.
