Sean Philpott, PhD, MSBioethics, Science and Ethics Officer Global Campaign for Microbicides PATH and faculty member of The Bioethics Program was recently appointed acting chair of The Human Studies Review Board(HSRB). He is an original member of the board, which was founded in 2006 to advise the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the scientific and ethical merits of research involving intentional exposure of human study participants to EPA-regulated compounds like pesticides, fungicides and insect repellents.

As a Federal advisory committee, the HSRB provides advice to the EPA on proposed third-party research proposals and protocols, as well as completed studies submitted to the Agency for regulatory decision-making purposes. In addition, it provides recommendations how to strengthen EPA's programs for protection of human participants of research.
