Dr. Orr received his M.D.,C.M. from McGill University (1966). He did residency training in family medicine and practiced family medicine in Vermont for 18 years where he was named “Vermont Family Doctor of the Year” in 1989. He was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago (1989-1990). From 1990 to 2000 he was Director of Clinical Ethics and Professor of Family Medicine at Loma Linda University (California). From 2000-2004 he served as Director of Ethics at Fletcher Allen Health Care and Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine where he continues as a clinical ethicist. He was honored by the AMA, in 1999, with the Isaac Hays & John Bell Award for Leadership in Medical Ethics and Professionalism. In 2006, he was selected as Scholar in Residence at The Kilns (the historic home of CS Lewis) in Oxford, UK.

He has been on the Advisory Board of the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity since its founding in 1994. He was a member of the Council on Ethical Affairs of the California Medical Association for 4 years, and chairman for 2 years. He has also served as Vice-President of the American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities.

Dr. Orr has lectured regionally, nationally, and internationally, and has contributed to the literature 5 books (2 as co-author and 3 as co-editor), 10 book chapters and over 100 articles about ethical issues, end-of-life medical care, and the ethics consultation process. Another book is in publication.
