History and
Theory Core Courses
The core curriculum in the history and theory of bioethics involves four on-line
courses: Advanced Bioethics, Healthcare Policy & Organizational
Ethics, Bioethics and the Law and a course
in either Clinical Ethics or
in Research Ethics.
Taught on a 10-week trimester schedule using the reliable Blackboard platform,
these courses involve a mix of on-line lectures and threaded discussions (an
asynchronous on-line class discussion format that allows students in different
time-zones, working at hours convenient to them, to discuss selected topics with
each other and with the faculty). Supplementing the on-line materials are assigned
readings in articles, books and textbooks. Assessment focuses on student participation
in class discussion, on the quality of their assigned papers and projects, and
on-line examinations.
One distinctive feature of The Bioethics Program is that the proseminar and many
of the core courses offer a historically contextualized perspective on bioethics.
Our faculty includes some of the world’s leading historians of medical
ethics, biomedical ethics and research ethics (Robert Baker, Laurence McCullough,
Susan Lederer, and Robert Veatch). |
